Every so often someone writes to us with an online store that's already selling, but feels like the platform is either overcharging them or holding them back. The question is almost always the same: switch, or stay? There's no single answer — it depends on how much you sell, how fast you're growing, and how much money you're quietly leaving on the table in fees.
1. Qué es cada opción, en una frase
1. What each option is, in one sentence
Shopify: a ready-to-use platform — you pay a monthly subscription and they handle everything technical. WooCommerce: a free plugin on top of WordPress — the software costs nothing, but someone still has to install, configure and maintain it. Custom: built from scratch for your specific business, without depending on someone else's structure.
2. The real cost isn't the one on the pricing page
Shopify looks cheap at first, but on top of the subscription it takes a percentage of every sale unless you use its own payment gateway — and in Chile, almost nobody can. WooCommerce is "free," but you need hosting, paid plugins (many on annual licenses) and someone to keep it all updated, because an outdated plugin is the single most common way a store gets hacked. A custom store costs more upfront, but afterward there's no per-sale fee or license to renew.
3. Payment methods: the problem nobody warns you about
Shopify Payments, its native gateway, doesn't operate in Chile. That forces you to bolt on Webpay or Mercado Pago externally, with setups that don't always mesh cleanly with Shopify's checkout — adding friction exactly where you can least afford it: at the moment of payment. WooCommerce has better local plugins for this, but they still need to be installed and tested properly. On a custom store, Webpay and Mercado Pago plug directly into the flow, with nothing patched on top.
4. Qué tan rápido puedes lanzar
4. How fast you can launch
If you need to be selling next week, Shopify wins without discussion — it's the fastest option to get running. WooCommerce takes a bit longer because you're assembling a plugin ecosystem. A custom store is the slowest to launch — it's built to last, not to ship tomorrow.
5. How much you can customize before hitting a wall
On Shopify, anything outside its app ecosystem gets difficult or expensive fast. WooCommerce is more flexible, but every new plugin is another point of failure, and sometimes two plugins simply don't play well together. Custom has no ceiling: if your business needs unusual pricing logic, a specific booking flow, or integration with an internal system, it just gets built that way from the start.
6. Entonces, ¿cuál te conviene?
6. So, which one is right for you?
If you're validating an idea or just starting out, Shopify or WooCommerce are still the right call — it makes no sense to invest in something custom before knowing the business works. The breaking point shows up once you're selling consistently and the per-transaction fee, plugin licenses and limitations start costing more than building it yourself would. That's when it's worth sitting down and running the real numbers, not the ones on the pricing page.
